I am having concrete floors replaced in a 1930s house - floors are being dug up and new floors put in - insulation and everything else. Builder is telling me it doesn't need screed on surface as its only required if you are having underfloor heating put in. Is that the case?

Yes it is. Concrete tends to sink in the middle and you cannot get it anywhere near as level as a semi dry screed.

Screeding a floor is a way of simplifying the whole floor laying process.

It affords the contractor a margin of error whilst allowing a second fix opportunity for various trades.

The truth is, if your contractor is familiar with a power float then there is no need for a screed unless otherwise requested.

Try getting concrete flush with a floor in a different room.
