If its thermalite block, take a screwdriver to it. Thats what I did. Horrid stuff. Very soft. Ended up gluing the backbox in with some "sticks like ****"
or you can just accept that you are going to damage the wall, pack round the socket box with sand and cement mortar afterwards to repair the hole from both sides, and skim the surface with filler or plaster before redecorating.
Yes. Many years ago, I saw a house being rewired. They wanted to put a socket on one side, but the rather heavy-handed apprentice knocked a hole right through (no stitch-drilling, bas!!)
So they fixed a stout piece of ply in the hole, fixed 35mm boxes to both sides and made good. Job done.
