Frank Herberts 'Dune' . 17 books, covering a fictional history of the mankind and universe, over 17,000 years, involving 50+ characters and more than two dozen planets, an epic story, it took him all his life to write it, and then his son had to finish the last two books.
The made a film with Kyle Mclachlan of the same name, it lasted 3 hours and covered about 1/3 of one book. If you made the whole thing into TV, you would need about 150 one hour episodes. Thats like 10 years worth of 15 episode seasons...........
