When trying to start the car, the car makes a sort of clicking sound but the engine won't start. At the same time, the lights on the dashboard are dim and flicker. Does anybody know what may be the cause of it? I've been told it might need a new starter motor. The car is 11 yrs old.

Most probably your battery is dead, I doubt it is your starter motor, get your battery checked first, then your starter motor.

Almost certainly the battery if the dash lights go dim.
If it was the solenoid the lights wouldnt be affected

i owned an old transit diesel once.

they were notorious for being stubborn starters in cold weather.

the symptoms were exactly as you describe, a clicking noise, dim dash lights and no turning of the starter.

i would run jump leads to the battery from a running motor, hey presto spinning starter, spinning engine and no clicking.

as ^neo^ has said, this seems like a dud battery.
