Had a letter though the door !

What a joke.

To qualify :

House must be 20 years old
Not rewired in the last 20 years

Check will take 30 mins and not make any mess

Visually inspect fuseboard, earthing and wiring to see if it meets current wiring standards. (hardly likely to is it ? )

In fairness they do point out the limitations of a visual inspection only. (in small print)

There's few client sites that being 20+ years old won't need some remedial works, so from a commercial point of view it makes absolute sense. if the hit rate is 1-20 visits for a rewire then it will pay well for the service supplier.

Human reaction to a list of issues such as lack of bonding, MET wrong gauge, tails wrong size, lack of RCD protection, old fittings, black cable all noted down on a tick sheet report will garner work and the reward of profit that comes with such remedials.

Yes they are looking for remedials, thats obvious

And while a visual check has limitations, its still a useful tool, PIRs generally list more faults found via visual inspection than the test kit uncovers

We had a free electric survey from a well known gas company based in britain.

They said everything appeared to be OK, despite there being circuits wired in rubber, and no MEBs to either the gas or water

All these promotions and flyers are about is getting in through the front door.
There was probably a couple of pictures of an example of an old installation, trying to scare people into getting work done.

I nearly ended up in court against a company carrying out a promotion like this. They manged to convince a whole road of sheltered homes that there earthing was undersized, and that it required the whole distribution to be changed. I proved to one tenant why this was not the case,he was the residential rep and so reported them to the local authority on who's behalf they were working and used me as reference for any complications.

Both QS's from the local authority and the regional company had no understanding of the adiabatic equation.
