Freesat+

Sky have had a Freesat service for several years. As with the BBC/ITV Freesat service, you just paid for the box and dish installation. Our TV had Freeview built in, but when we moved house we found that we could not receive Freeview and Channel Five was unobtainable. So we had to go for a satellite solution. Luckily the previous owners had left a Sky dish behind, so we went for Sky Freesat and just paid for the Sky box.

So far we have had no cause to complain; the choice of channels is more than enough and we are not avid sports and movie fans, so we do not miss the paid-for channels.

However, we would like to have the recording facility of Sky+ and, when our TV dies and we have to replace it, the HD facility. But sky will not sell the Sky+ box on its own, you have to take out a subscription.

Hopefully, now BBC/ITV Freesat is making Freesat+ and HD available without a subscription, Sky will change its mind and make the Sky+ box available without subscription.

Another problem is that the free channels on Sky Freesat is not the same as on either BBC/ITV Freesat or Freeview.

Sky used to charge £10/month for Sky+ facilities, but have dumped that, albeit putting up the package prices to compensate. However, you can't have the FTA non-subs stuff and use the playback/record facility on the box so, as ever, Murdoch has one's plums firmly within his grasp.
