Does a freezer in a garage have to have its own radial circuit to keep it at bay from possible nuisance tripping on an rcd covered ring ?

put it this way.

if it (freezer) is fed from a supply backed up by an rcd if the rcd trips your frezzer will turn off.
It is quite common to put fridgee / freezer on own radial non rcd protected circuit

it all depends on how the freezer is used

if the house is occupied all the time then having a freezer on same rcd as all the sockets isn't so bad as any trip is likely to get noticed pretty damn quick.

simerally if its running of a rcd that feeds everything in the garage or even just the freezer then if you visit the freezer freqently its not a problem.

the problem comes if you go away for long periods and want to leave stuff in the freezer.

I have my freezer on it's own B16 MCB radial circuit, feeding a 2.5.sq.mm cable to a 13amp Fuse-connection unit behind the freezer - a much better method

whats the point of having a switch and a neon if its behind your freezer?!

If you're going to have a dedicated freezer circuit wouldn't it be better to have an unswitched 13A socket. It can't get switched off accidently, but you can disconnect freezer quickly if you need to?

Mount the FCU to one side and slightly above the fridge freezer, neon shows supply is working.

Using socket outlet on a downstairs circuit means you need 30ma rcd to comply with regs. Using a FCU avoids that problem.

I thought that was only if the socket is likely to be used for outside stuff like lawnmowers? I've got a house that I let and everything is on 30mA rcd. The tenant once phoned to say the power was off. She was in the habit of moving the fridge to clean behind it and the cable had worn through and shorted out. This means the fridge case was live until the rcd tripped so my opinion is fridge goes on rcd. Perhaps a 'one-off' not likely to happen again, and she should have switched off before moving fridge, but it did happen.
