Fuel consumption figures?

My older 2001 Peugeot 307 petrol 1.6 is now only doing about 29 mpg with a lot of in town driving.

I am sure that before the E10 petrol it used to do about 39 mpg.

Otherwise it seems to work fine and not have any obvious engine problems.

Is that a typical mpg which a smaller family car is now getting?

Or should I be looking for some fault?

my niece found the same , much lower petrol consumption. not sure what car she has - but it has been a significant difference , even on long runs
i have not really noticed any difference , and i keep a record of all my fuel usage and MPG.
I know other people have mentioned this too

Ethanol has less calorific value than gasoline, therefore more fuel will be used to maintain the usual power, I’m afraid.

As John says, ethanol is less energy-dense. Even the government's own figures suggest up to a 3% drop in fuel efficiency for E10. OK, you're looking at a bigger percentage than that, but we're in the right ball park, and it's very hard to be completely accurate under real life driving conditions. Super unleaded doesn't usually have ethanol in it (or at least, has an ethanol content closer to the E5 that we used to get), so you could try a few tankfuls of that and see if it goes up again?
