You can stop it using ALL data if you want deano. Easiest way is to invest 61p on SwitchPro Widget. You then put the widget on the home screen (or any and/or every screen if you wish), and you can switch data on and off at your command.

You heard wrong

Programs downloaded can be set to auto or manual update, and programs already installed don't update unless you do an update of the OS from settings

Also various programs can be set to update only over wifi, and not the mobile network

But TBH, its madness to have a phone like this without some sort of unlimited and constant data connection
