Probably because we're an opportunist species and the urge to 'take a chance' is in our DNA.

Having said that, I'm not one for gambling, even if the odds seem favourable - which they rarely are.   I've made a fortune on the lottery just by not playing it.   Every time the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 don't come up I make a pound. OK, there have been times when I've 'lost' nine pounds but, on average, it's been win, win, win all the way.

I occasionally spend an evening in the casino. I enjoy the evening, win or lose. Obviously I prefer to win. I set myself a limit and when it's gone I stop, or I stop when I think I've won enough and my luck is going to change.

I see it like this;
If I go out with my mates, taxi, drinks, meal, taxi, etc it will cost me at least £100 for the evening, maybe more, which could end up with me going home, not very late, possibly very drunk, having eaten a meal that I really didn't need.
If I lose £100 in the casino, I go home, very late, having enjoyed the evening, with a few drinks, possibly met new friends, etc.
I might just go home, very late, with £100 or more and still enjoyed the evening even more so.

But I'm wary of the roulette table. If I play I only play on the red/black, high/low, odds/evens. Maybe the three dozens. But I only play one round and go back to the other tables.

I like a flutter myself, at one point it was not unheard of me to put what I considered at the time, large sums of money on the horses.
My aim was purely to win money, you do get a kick out of picking the winner but I was only interested in financial gain.
You need to be controlled and never chasing.
Don't bet as much as I once did, still have the odd punt.
Enjoy the day out at the races, that is one of my pleasures in life and will have a few calculated bets.
I don't see a problem in having a bet, providing the bet doesn't cause you a problem!

Roulette gives you MUCH better odds than the lottery!

In Roulette, the house only beats the whole table when the ball lands on the 0 (or 00, if there is one).

In the lottery half of the stake is taken straight away to go to the "good causes" like expenses-paid junkets for Seb Coe, or top flight barristers for ****** and illegal immigrants.

Only half of the money you stake even makes it into the prize fund, so you're on a loser before the numbers are even drawn!

As a shareholder in the company that has sole rights to creating the "Lottery Funded" hoardings, I do very well out of the charitable side. We only charge £750000000000000000000000000 per sign, which means that there is still £0.000000000000001 to be given to the project in question. That's why your gambling on the lottery is a dead cert for me :D

That's a very cynical attitude....Thanks to Tony Blairs' continental licencing hours, I was sat at a pavement cafe at midnight enjoying a glass of wine and reading the Churchill papers.
Earlier at the Royal Opera House with a group of Peruvian guinea pig farmers we were discussing how poorly off we would all be on the council estate without the help from the lottery.

I do enjoy a flutter when I go the races, a crowd of us usually go to a few meetings throughout the year and enjoy a little gamble and if I lose its part of the day which I enjoy but if I win its a bonus, used to have a go on the lottery but havent for a while

If you like lotteries, see if you have a local charity that runs its own. We 'contribute' to the St Oswald's Hospice lottery every week.

PS: We actually won once - about ten years ago.

PPS: I hope this doesn't get pulled as advertising. :!: :!: :!:

Excellent idea SC.....

I always play euro millions when its about 10 zillion pounds ..... which is quite ridiculous because if I won even a small amount I would be happy.....but somehow the extra large jackpot has this huge attraction.

I once put a hundred pounds on Bruno to beat Mike Tyson.....my hubby has never forgiven me
