I am currently in the process of building a garage with 6" blocks set on the "flat" forming the single skin walls. The garage is around 6x7m in size.

I have been informed from building control that I require to install expansion joints at 6m intervals .

I am unsure the best way to do this as i feel leaving a gap within the block work will make the wall less stable.

Any advice appreciated.

It will, unless you use sleved anchors in some of the bed joints (google Ancon).

But what your inspector seems to be forgetting is that building regulations should only be applied in so far as they affect health and safety. Shrinkage cracking in block is not - in your case - going to be a H&S issue.
