Does a consumer unit in a garage have to be a "Garage" consumer unit and IP rated or can a normal house unit do. The Garage units that I have seen do not have many mcb spaces.
They need to be suitable for the environment they are installed in. Unless your garage leaks like a sieve, any standard CU will do.
However, the items sold as 'garage' consumer units usually have space for 2 circuits since it's only a garage - typically a light and a few sockets.
What are you intending to install in yours?
Them garage consumer units are awful - too small. And no room for expansion, so if anyone in future wants to add another circuit or anything, they are snookered.
There is a consumer unit in there already, it is near the door and has never been a problem but we are adding a shower, a cooker more sockets an attached summer room etc. so the unit needs upgrading.
My reference to building control was not with reference to electrics, but with your apparent intention to create aditional living space (which a domestic kitchen and "summer room" falls under). I believe additional drainage points and bathrooms must also be notified.
I'm not trying to wind you up, merely pointing out that you must inform LABC when carrying out work such as this on your home.
