garage lights

Hi All,

just looking at lighting in my new garage, 5.2 by 6.2 wide.

it has 2 8ft doors on the long side and will be using one side for my van and the other as a workshop area.

my plan was to make 3 rows , one down middle and run other along ceiling but not sure how far in from the wall ?


any ideas on what size lights would give the best light?

it will have a bench along the rear and will put under cupboard lights along there.

any ideas will be very helpfull

I think it would just be personnel preference. I've always had strip lights in the garage. With another right above the workbench like you said. There's nothing worse than trying to work in a shadow of your own head!!!! I'd put the one in the middle like you said then as I have massive OCD when it comes to electrics, I'd stick the other two half way again between the middle and either wall. I've got 2x5ft strips in mine but its not as big as yours. I'd just go for the biggest. You can never have too much light.

Knowing the ceiling height would be helpful.

3 five foot fluorescent, should do you.
If you are having worktop lights also fitted.
I would run the tubes perpendicular to the longest length of garage (6.2m) at 1.55m spaces and because your work bench would require the light more than the van, would mount the tubes about 1.8m from work bench wall, then you should get an even spread of working light.

fit your sockets at 5ft height or above this allows you to use all the wall floor space keeps trailing cables out the way saves your back and preserves the sockets from bashes
if you plan on maintaining your van have a light low enough down to illuminate the engine bay
