Garage metal bars - support?

I am painting the walls in my garage and there are metal bars fixed to the walls in various places with circular holes in. Are these supporting the walls or can they be removed? See pic below.

they attach the roof to the walls to prevent it blowing away in strong winds. Don't remove them.
