Gardeners rates

I need a labourer to dig, shovel and level a lawn. In a small South Coast town (not a prosperous area)

Heavy work but not skilled

I had been thinking around £150 a day.

In london I pay about £120/150 for trustworthy labourers. That said, they are hand sanding rather than digging trenches.

A m I an out of touch old fart ? I need a gardener as I fell over in mine and am not steady on my feet now. As someone who never paid for any service or repair to our houses/gardens, I'm 71 yrs and am " a bit surprised" that gardeners I have had quotes from want £1k a week. Comments welcome

Sorry to hear that. You strike me as being a good person.

I have heard £18/hour for an actual gardener (as in, didn’t go to college and get a bit of paper, but could name every plant in your garden and know how to prune it). That’s for jobs of a few hours each, not whole days or weeks of work, somewhere possibly a fraction cheaper than East Sussex but not by much. Not cash-in-hand.

Minimum wage is currently £12.21/hour.
