My gas fire sparks and lights but then I need to keep the button down for a few seconds. Now normally the fire then stays on but today it just dies. Is it time for a new fire or is it a small part that needs replacing. Would I need a gas fitter to replace said part?

Many thanks

yes a small part around £15 - £25 would be normal
yes you need an RGI to fit it

all in whould cost £80 - £100 if we were doing the job.

New fire? No
Small part? probably
Gas Fitter? Yes
Do it yourself? Never

Gas fires being open flued or flueless appliances are at the greatest risk of being the source of a CO incident (IMO). Your gas engineer whilst repairing the fire will also check the integrity and performance of the flue and safety devices.

It may not even need the part replacing, it might just need cleaning and adjustment.

Gas fires do need regular servicing to keep them working correctly and particularly to ensure that they are safe to use.

May sure they are qualified and experianced on fires before making appointment! Many are not.
