Hi our gas meter (a U16 installed in 1992) has recently failed. The transporter has been in and turned our gas off two and a half weeks ago. Our supplier is finding it difficult to deal with the U16 meter and has agreed finally to replace with a U6 (our supply is used for one combi 30kw). We have agreed that the existing meter is to be removed and we are to commission a gas fitter to fit a new box and they will then install a new U6 meter.

Unfortunately, the existing meter sits in a 1m high twin brick wall along side a neighbours house. We have been in the house 27 years and prior to the leak things have been fine. Now the ownership of the neighboring property has changed and they cannot find any wayleave in their deeds. This together with National Gas demanding a surface mount meter box is starting to cause problems. Not least because we cant seem to get a gas engineer to reconnect the pipe work on our side of the as a wayleave does not exist. Our neighbour is very understanding and seems happy to establish a wayleave but we are both elderly and finding it difficult to get by without gas for heating and hot water.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a wayleave set up under such circumstances? Any comments greatly appreciated on the suitability of a recessed vs surface mount box for a 9 inch thick garden brick wall (with no cavity).

christ knows why they are leaving it down to you , There equipment was faulty its down to them to sort it all out again other than the box contact their complaints dept and tell them you are going to ofgem .
Also contact ofgem and ask them in theory you should be getting compensation for everyday you are without gas which is usually a minimum of 30 quid a day.
A u16 (also known as a g10) although not common in domestic properties is a readily available meter

The meter housing is customers responsibility. The ECV is ESP problem. U16 in houses, is a job I do, and do a lot, obviously, without housing I would not be able to install one. However that said, you can do a repipe, to a service mounted box, as long as the meter inlet is within 2m pipe work and reg of the ECV.
