Gas pipe next to meter tales and cu

Hi

If during an inspection an electrician comes across a gas pipe in contact with consumer unit and the meter tales are very close also, what should the procedure be?

i've read in the on site guide that a fire barrier should be installed.

Why would a fire barrier be needed ?

There should be a min 10sq.mm. earth bonding cable between the consumer unit and the gas pipe.
