My son would like to put up a cooker hood on the wall. He had a gas pipe coming down the wall where he wants to put it.

1. Could he put up a wooden framework & sleeve pipe & cover it with ply wood. Then fix hood to wood.

2. He's not sure whether pipe is live. Is there anything he can do himself to find whether it is or not.

Cheers Doug

Cheers for the reply Harry Not sure where it starts from, but ends 30" from the floor.

You need then, to find out where it start from to decide whether it is live or not.

30" from the floor suggests it might have been a supply for an oven, a gas fridge, or even a boiler - if there are indications other pipes in the area. Is the end of the pipe capped, or is it a bayonet socket?

Tell him definitely not to get an AEG/Electrolux cooker hood.
We made that mistake and the damned thing keeps turning itself on randomly, especially overnight.
It scares the life out of the cats, understandably, and in addition it is so loud even on the slowest setting that you can't hear yourself speak. We have taken to turning it off at the isolator, as that is the only way to make sure it won't start up on its own.
