Gas Sniffer

Question for the CORGI guys:

I'm about to buy a gas snifer, the type with a flexible neck which make a 'tick' noise as they detect gas leaks etc. I was wondering which brand most engineers use? I've used the Regin X75 before and its pretty good, but all the other manufacturers (Anton, TPI, Rothy etc) make an equivalent. Is any particular one considered the best?

There is only one model which I find the best to USE !

Thats the Anglo Nordic, about £96 +. Its so good because it has a thin 300 mm flexible sensing tube which can go into small crevices and has an inlet only 2 mm diameter which can closely target the leak with considerable accuracy.

It has four LEDs to show gas detection and an audible wail as well.

The downside is it still has NICADS which we all should know have memory effect. Furthermore its charging system takes about 48 hours when new. With NICADS you never know when they are going to run out!

Mine is three years old and never gets up to full charge green LED any more.

I really dont understand how anyone can still make such a good device and refuse to upgrade it to NI-MH. Cell phones did that five years ago!

Ended up getting the Anton as I needed it quickly - very impressed by it, and paid only £100 for it (excl VAT).

Did a tightness test with my u-gauge, no perceptible pressure drop in over 2 mins, but the Anton was able to detect a very small leakage from a compression joint.

If there was no pressure drop then how did you know that it was leaking?

Are you that it was not just detecting the last curry meal?

I tested the pipework using the sniffer (just to test the sniffer really), and it sounded when near a certain compression nut. I then did a tightness test for 2 minutes, no drop. I checked the sniffer by aiming it towards the window, TV, toaster and wall and it made no click. Whenever I moved it towards this same gas carrying joint it did make a click and the red light came on. When i gave the nut about 1/8 of a turn more, hey presto - no more clicking. Easy really
