Tragedy strikes again at Mackintosh's masterpiece, but how come the whole building was burnt out?
I suspect a fairly safe bet is that there was no compartmentation. When the building was opened, it seems the council had mistakenly approved the plans with open staircases.
On the opening day itself when there were many visitors to the building, firemen had to be stationed on each landing with buckets of water as a precaution.
In the recent restoration after the 2014 fire, did they add compartmentation, or did they prefer to stick with the original design?
If that's the case, it's questionable how far authenticity should go if it puts such an important building at risk.
