I had a problem which the engineer solved by detaching the flue fan plastic tube and blowing into it. After he replaced it the boiler fired. It happened again after a couple of days. He doesn't say what the problem is but seems to suggest I should consider a new boiler. Is the problem I have simple to resolve rather than constantly calling someone in which gets expensive. Not keen to spend on a new boiler if it can be avoided.

Pray tell, what boiler you have. It sounds like he messed with the air pressure switch.

Its a Glowworm Swiftflow 100 combi boiler. Any advice would be appreciated.

It is a simple matter to resolve and should be a relatively cheap repair. It is associated with a safety device and I would advise calling a boiler repair specialist. The repairs should not be attempted by diy.
