Going slow

Why is it considered an insult for someone to be a bit of a slow "goer" on the old intellectual front?

Friend of mine seems to come to conclusions at a bit of a snail's pace, but is rarely wrong.

Honestly, I did google it to make sure and although is has a common unpleasant parlance, it wasn't always the case (a bit like the word "gay" which has changed meaning and implication.) Indeed the French for "late" is "en ******", which suggests something

In the mid 80s there was a haulage company in the London area, their trucks were very gayly painted and the logo was "Gay Freight" but they dissapeared when "gay" took on a different meaning.
