This must have installed in an update (Android 14).

But now if I try to turn the phone off it appears and prevents me doing so.
The only way I can turn off the phone is with a 10 second hard power down.
I've got the assistant disabled in apps, but it doesn't make any difference.

Any ideas?

I do the couple of seconds power button hold and usually get the power off and other options.

Instead I now get the assistant coming up asking me for a question.

And it won't accept 'power off'!

Just want to get rid of the damn thing.

If you scroll down the UI from the top of the phone do you see any power button symbol?

The answer seems to be in the Gestures settings:

I found the answer!

settings --> system --> gestures --> press & hold power button, then change it from "digital assistant" to "power menu"

This setting must have been flipped in the latest system update so that "digital assistant" is the default. Sigh.

Pull down notification bar. Pull down again so it covers screen and the power off button is on the screen bottom right.

Basically. Power off is in the notification screen and a touch screen button not the button on the side of the phone

OK I know how to fix this.

Go to your local engineering workshop, locate their press, place the phone in it and activate the press, hopefully it will squeeze the AI out of it.
Then get yourself another phone and do NOT install AI again.
