Grant Oil Boiler Leaking

He then informed me that they would potentially do the replacement at their cost, but that they'd rip apart the boiler in their warehouse and if they found it was my fault I'd have to pay for everything.
They're notorious for doing this unfortunately. As I understand it, it's their policy to insist that boilers with reported leaking heat exchangers are shipped back to them for inspection, at which point they will decide whether it is a manufacturing fault or an installation fault. A cynic might suggest that behind closed doors there's only one decision they're going to make there... One reason I refuse to fit them.

If you end up needing a replacement boiler, look at EOGB Sapphire (expensive but more efficient, and a 25 year heat exchanger warranty) or Hounsfield (cheaper, excellent build quality with no plastic bits, 5 year no quibble warranty).

I'm another victim - our Grant Vortex Eco 26-35 is leaking. But not from any pipework, PRV or condensate joints. Just oozes from underneath but curiously only when actually working. Abou 150mls twice a day. I guess it's from a fault in the water jacket carcass - whatever it's called - though why it only leaks when it's working puzzles me. Been doing it for many weeks. It's 16yrs old, so I suppose it'll mean a new boiler, though Grant won't sell me one without the expensive Riello burner, which should have plenty of life in it as it's only burned 1500 litres a year. The Wilson Wallflame in our last house lasted nearly 40yrs.

Wonder in the cases where the leaking Grants are < 5 years old as to what the boiler return temperature is/was. It could easily be less than 30C if UFH only used and lead to premature corrosion of the primary? HEX. Even all rad systems now regularly return temperatures down to 35C or less, the recommended min return I think is 40C.

Can I throw a curved ball here ? Octopus energy air source heat pump . We got rid of a 20 ( estimated) year old gas boiler, Potterton floor standing. Has been in a few months now, changed to Octopus for elec. only No gas in house now. All seems good - install team were good. Only a 2 bed bungalow though. Can't hurt to look @ it ?

It's a thought, but I don't think even a 16Kw air pump would hack it. It's a big house; an 8 circuit underfloor for the ground floor and around 14 rads upstairs. It would need a tank the size of a tanker. The Grant is set up with a 30Kw nozzle. As far as low temperature corrosion is concerned, they should be using metal that doesn't corrode by now. Are they still using the sort of rubbish steel they used to make exhaust pipes out of? If modern exhausts can last 20yrs and more (mine have) why can't boilers?
