I have green water in my pond and i mean really green, pond was cleaned out last year and the filter cleaned last month,i have a filter,uv combination and according to my calculations and the "experts" it is the right size for the pond,it started off fine for a couple of years and it started going green last year and it has gradually got worse, the water is coming out of the filter green,i have oxygenating weed in there and a small lily, the fish seem happy and are growing really well especially the ghosties(2),its a 2000 gallon pond by the way.

When did you last replace the UV lamp, they only have a life of about 9months before they loose their effectiveness

Make sure you also keep the quartz sleeve clean, algae can sometimes grow on this and reduce the effectiveness.

Have you made any other changes that may effect the balance of the pond e.g more fish, extra feeding etc? How about a pic so that we can see your planting etc.

One of the problems may just be that we have had a lot of sunshine this month and the plants have not had time to grow yet.

I have only a small nature pond which due to its small surface area is susceptible to turning green. However, I picked up a tip that says that pond plants can be planted in pots of gravel [no soil] It stops fish digging up the lilies etc and as there is no soil so there is no nutrient leaking into the water which contributes to greening.

I have always planted in gravel and found that the fish still dig it up whilst foraging for creepy crawlies ;)
