Installing the pump so that the direction is the same as the old pump means that the label on the front is upside down.

Can this pump be installed with the writing upside down or do I have to take the shell off and turn it round?

It can be installed with the writing upside down, yes, but it looks a bit rubbish. For the sake of the 2 minutes it takes to turn it round, I'd turn it round
