The SPD (Surge Protection device) started being fitted to CUs about the same time as we went to LED lights. As to if needed it depends what else is on the same supply. Some people have no problem without them.
I have been in my house around 5 years, I has a SPD and maybe lost around 5 bulbs, most Smart bulbs, which loose connection with hub or router, but with around 40 bulbs is not bad.
My son however has lost quite a lot, he blames it on cheap bulbs, but I also use cheap bulbs. My supply voltage is a bit on the high side, and his is on the low side. But no one can really say it is because he does not have a SPD.
When testing LEDs in Uni, we found if over driven they would not recover, and output dropped, cheap LED unit can use a simple capacitor as current limiter, but more expensive used chips, but the chips can stop the light being dimmed.
I don't use dimming switches these can protect the bulb but also mean you need a bulb which is more vulnerable to over voltage, so unless using a dimmer, better not to use dimmable bulbs.
Heat can affect the bulb, but in pods like you show would not expect a problem.
