Although this problem has been covered before I cannot find a post that mentions the same wiring colours that I have in my switches.

I am trying to replace our landing and hallway lights. Both lights worked fine before and I have marked the wires, drawn diagram and checked and checked again that I have correctly matched up wiring from the old switch to the new switch.

However, although both lights work fine independently, the landing light cannot be turned off upstairs if it has been turned on downstairs.

Landing Switch
COM = 2 x black
1 WAY = Red & Red
2 WAY = Brown

Hall Way Switch
COM = Red
COM = Brown
1 WAY = Black
1 WAY = Red
2 WAY = Black

Looking at this wiring can anyone see why this may be happening please. Many thanks.

Can we have a picture of the hall switch wiring?

If not can you print the terminals in the position they are on the switches?

IS it the LIGHTS you have changed, or the SWITCHES?

Also how many cables are at each switch and which colour cables relate to each conductor.

You see, me no understand the landing switch. You have 5 wires there,
two reds, two blacks (are these two separate two-core + earth cables?) and you also have a lone brown conductor - what is that associated with, doesnt it have a blue conductor too?

PS, please take time to understand how a two gang switch is often laid out:

On the downstairs switch you don't make it clear which terminals are the upstairs switch and which are the downstairs switch.

I take it the brown is a separate cable from the red/black.

I think I know the answer, but you need to confirm the above first.
