I have recessed halogen lights fitted by previous owner in bedrooms. 2 have now "blown" and I have been unable to replace them with new ones that work - Im a total non-diy'er and haven't a clue - i've pulled the wire out as far as I can and cannot see an in-line fuse. Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome! Many thanks

you have either the wrong lamps or broken a wire

12V50W36 - the new bulbs i've bought say the same as the old ones that are dud - i've tried placing the new bulbs in "working" fittings and they work but they don't work in the 2 fittings that are dead hence why I thought there was some sort of inline fuse that had blown (ie it appears to be the 2 fittings that are dead and not the bulbs)!?
Those are 12v lamps. Somewhere there will be one or more transformers that convert the mains voltage to 12v. It will look like this: http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=48058&ts=16853
The transformer may need replacing or you could have a wiring fault.
You'll need a test meter to diagnose the problem.

Thanks to all 3 of you - next stupid question from me is where on earth will i find this transformer to check it. The ceilings are "sealed" with no access points - i've had a look behind the light switches and there is nothing!?
Did they blow at the same time? You usually have more than one light per transformer. I would expect the transformer to be above the ceiling. If you can get the fitting out, you could try a mirror and a torch to locate the transformer.
Transformer may well be part of the fitting. Is it mains or 12v supply coming into the defective fittings?
