I have never tried it myself but you could build boxes from plaster board to cover the lights. I heard someone say about this some time ago, not sure quite how to go about it but perhaps no nails to join it all up?

Plasterboard sounds like a good idea, especially as I've got a few sheets left over. Can't see how it would be any worse than wood considering that the ceiling that the lights are being recessed into are constructed from plasterboard. I will just have to make sure there is plenty of free air space as Salem suggests.
