Hi

I recently had a plumber round to fix the motorised valve on the central heating system. While he was working on the system he found a couple of issues:

1. He asked me if I had to bleed the radiators a lot. Funnily enough I have to do it weekly when the heating's on a lot, even though we have a closed system (megaflo and worcester 30cdi boiler). He said there is some kind of outlet pipe missing on the megaflo which would allow excess air to escape (sorry for lack of terminlogy etc!)

2. He asked if the house takes a long time to heat up. And it does. I have a 3 bed detached house, typical 1930s so not very efficient, and though upstairs heats up quickly it takes over an hour for downstairs to heat up. He explained that this was because we had a couple of radiators taken away before and the previous plumbers didn't tidy up the pipework properly, leaving essentially a "short circuit" going out of the boiler and then back into it again. He said that this hotter water returning to the boiler so quickly will tell the boiler that the house is warm therefore causing the boiler to work at a lower rate. He said he could fix this by removing this "short circuit".

Now everything he said makes sense, and he seemed to be pretty much the best plumber we've had. However, he charges £70 per hour, and even though I would like the work done, I'm wondering.... so I just thought I'd double-check it with you guys here.

All advice welcome!

Thanks!

Some pics would be helpful. :)

1. A general view of the megaflo - then we can see if there's anything missing.

2. The pipework where the rads have been removed.
