HELP! loud bang and no electric

Pictures will definately help, it's more then likely a case of a Ryefield type (7 way,10 way ect) distribution unit that belongs to the DNO with their fuses in and meters tailed off this for each flat situated in the cupboard. Then have submains going from them to each flat if the meters themselves are not in the actual flat. Might be wrong but then again i need a pic :)

Now, could she be wrong or does this sound spot on? and also, if i start getting the owner of the block to do this for me he is going to charge me a FORTUNE! which i havnt got. If i got some pictures of this cupboard with all the high voltage signs on tomorrow and posted them up here would anyone be able to tell me what my best option would be please>???

I very much doubt your landlord can charge you simply to re-instate your supply. After all, an electricity supply is one of the things you pay them to provide you with. Just don't mention that you caused the fault...

This is a management ompany we are talking about, they charge you for everything.

I guess i have to take a look at my lease and see what it says.

And next time remember to cut the power and test for dead before you go dropping tools on wires

Better yet, don't be pulling sockets off if you don't know what you're doing.

It wasn't quite as strait forward as dropping a tool on it. The socket was out of the wall cos the wall aint there anymore and when the acrow dropped on it the socket case went through the wires, then pop!

But your right, I shouldn't be bypassing the socket myself, I should get someone in to do it.

Ok

Here is what I have in my hallway cupboard

I'll post some more tomorrow when I get home.

Thanks for all your help so far

there is quite likely to be a fuse in that cutout centre left

however, it is possible that the actual fuse is somewhere else and there is a solid link in there.

see if there is any indication on the fuseholder labels.

Make sure that there is no power at either of the merters or CUs (I presume one is for Economy 7 or similar heating).

if I were you I would describe the cutout and fuseholder adjacent to the meter to your supplier and insist that they come and change the fuse. It will probably be labelled by the DNO.

If you can arrange access to any other electrical cupboard in the building at the same time that may help.

Calls to replace a company fuse are usually fulfilled within about an hour.

If the person you speak to refuses to arrange a call say "I see. I have reported a blown company fuse and you refuse to come and repair it? My call is timed at (time and date). Please make a note of that as I will be including it in my claim for compensation under the assured service levels. May I have your name please?"

see if there is any indication on the fuseholder labels.

Excellent Info John

Thank you

What sort of wording should I be looking for?
Just anything that mentions fuse?

On the tags on those black boxes there are labels attached that say do not remove as it is illegal etc.

who would have put them on? the DNO?
if that is the case, does that mean that the equipment is theirs?

Do you pay your bill to a landlord/housing agency or an energy company? If (as I assume) you pay an energy company, then:

The fuse is on their side of the meter, ergo it's their fuse, end of. This applies whether that is the fuse on your meter board, or it's in a cupboard somewhere else.

I think the person on the phone was BSing you mate.

Yes I pay to EDF.

Im really curious now to find out what the case is.
I think I will call them again tomorrow and say what john said if they give me any more jip. for the amount i pay in electric they should at least come and take a look.

Thanks for all your help peeps

Just get the DNO out - it looks to me to be their issue and not a sparks.

They do not usually charge for one off fuse replacements.

I was going to tell them that i cut one of the wires by mistake but have had now made good.
Why not just tell them the truth?

And also, as part of all this work you are doing, get the fuseboard(s) replaced with CU(s) with circuits on RCBOs. You've already had a 1st-hand example of what's wrong with rewirable fuses, and with work going on that involves walls being removed now is a good time to carry out a complete overhaul of your installation.

I did in the end and they came and sorted it

Im a bit busy at the moment but i'll let you know later what happened with the pics that I took (incase anyone is interested :o)

It may be handy for people that have this problem in the future .
