Hi All,

We have an issue that we are not sure how to address. The way the house lies on a slight slope means the rear steps down and we want to open up the back of the house to allow an open plan kitchen/diner/living room. The issue comes with the rear steel work, this opens the rear aspect of the house, but where the pitched roof joins the rear of the house there will be a void that we are not sure what to do with.

This is probably a really common and easy solution to this; wood stud below beam to infill, welded or bolted steel below main steel.

Please can anyone suggest the easiest and also the best solution to address this. We don't want to over engineer the steels to allow a bend to be introduced as the engineer as said this introduces complexity.

I have attached an image of the issue; red is the beam, blue is the void.

Many thanks

Why is the beam so high?
Due to requiring a 2000mm doorway from front section to rear. The rear is about 980mm lower than the front.

If we lower the beam it will impede the doorway, which is to the right of the plan, not shown.

See we can engineer a beam with an angled section to follow the line of the roof. But this adds complexity and cost if we can do this is a more cost effective way. The beam is taking the whole rear section of the house, which will include a loft extension.

Thanks

Its not just the beam but getting a weathered seal (lead flashing etc) is also going to be a factor as well as thermal bridging, condensation etc.

I can't make head nor tail of it.

The problem is clear but the height dimensions and that low roof make no sense

Do you have better drawings? A full side and rear elevation and a side section?
