Hi all

We bought an Airflow Icon 30 SELV extractor fan off Ebay which arrived without the transformer in the box. We phoned Airflow and were told a replacement transformer will cost £40 which is what we paid for the fan. Is there any reason why we can't use one of the transformers for sale at places like Screwfix? Any recommendations as to what we should be looking for?

Many thanks

the transformer must be rated to supply the fan or bigger.

need more info to give more help.

ratting of fan, ac or dc voltage anything else you may think of use

The SELV iCON fans have a transformer with three output terminals with any timer/control modules located in the fan itself and controlled over the extra 3rd wire. This means that any parts you can locate for a standard fan probably aren't going to be any use, as it's much more common for the timer to be contained inside the same unit as the transformer with just two wires to the fan.

You can probably work around the issue by using a standard extractor fan transformer and playing with the wiring to the timer connection in the fan, in which case it needs to have a 12v DC output rated to at least 30VA.

I'd be inclined to buy the proper part, even then you've still saved £50 on top of the standard retail price on this fan.

northcoombes, the link was very useful, the first page says "low energy DC fans" transformers have an ac output, it is possible to make a rectifier to change the ac to dc, but is not a good idea for the average diy person to attempt this (sorry)

So the answer to your question is as electronicsuk says spend the £40

on the bright side at least by having the correct part you do not ilvaidate any warranty, and for next time when buying from ebay , aleways read the small print (or ask here first)

Thanks guys - your advice was very useful. The seller on Ebay offered to refund as he wasn't aware the transformer was missing. Think I will just buy a new transformer from Airflow though.
Thanks again!
