Help with damp

Hi. I have just recently bought a ground floor flat and there is a little bit of penetrating damp on one of the walls, which the specialist company said was caused by the stairs outside leading up to the upper flat. I was just wondering what is the best way to seal the stairs. There is a slight gap between the stairs and wall.
