Hoping someone can help.

Over the past few days a constant high pitch beeping has developed in my house.

I have no idea where this is coming from and the beeping even continues when all the electrics in the house are turned off from the mains (meter)

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Is it a new house? Someone has dropped a mobile phone down the cavity when building the place.

A few things:
Burglar alarm (they have battery backup)
Smoke alarm flat (they can do strange things with no power)
Any other battery powerd appliance. Alarm clocks. Boiler controller (again, battery backup so they keep the time and settings).

And I hope you havent really touched the meter. Its the property of the electricity company.

Thanks for your response.

I only have one smoke alarm which is battery operated and don't think the sound is coming from that.

I do have an old burglar alarm, but this has been switched off your some time.

Nothing else battery powered and the boiler is an old emersion (spelling) boiler, no electrics other than the thermostat (I think)

and no I have not messed around with the meter.

Any other suggestions

stand in the quiet dark and try and trace the sound?
how frequent is the noise?
if it's every 30 mins or so then it's the smoke alarm..

is your stat battery powered digital affair or just a simple turn dial?

Tried to trace the sound in the dark, but with no luck.

the noise is constant and has not stopped for 2 days, it is not broken and continuous.

sorry I was wrong the just checked and have no thermostat, it is only a water tank heated by elecricty (dont know what this type of boiler is called)

"A very expensive type" I'd say. Where does the room heat come from?

sure it's not tinitus? a high pitched whistling sound in your ears? I get it occasionally.. usually when I have a bit of a cold..

if it's continuous and unbroken then it ought to be really easy to find..

might be something on standby, a button stuck on a remote controll, the phone off the hook, or even something next door..

it may not even be electrical..
some pipes whistle if there is a tap left partially on, or a valve for the immersion filler or toilet tank etc..

Speaking of next door, our next door neighbours went away for 2 weeks once, and they left their alarm set for 5 every morning, smack bang the other side of the wall to MY HEAD when I sleep. Every bloody morning, beep beep beep for 5 mins!!

Have you had any mischievous friends who might have hidden something in the house. ? Took three weeks to find the one we concealed in a colleagues office. That gave a short bleep every few minutes.

A hearing aid can make a whistling noise. has anyone lost one in the house.

Have you got gas? (Not personally).

Sometimes the gas meter can emit a high pitched noise.

Take the batteries out of the smoke alarm. Gone quiet?

Are there any child's toys in the house, under a cushion or behind the sofa or something?

Kid's toys have all sorts of effects these days.

Aliens!

So, it's a persistent high-pitched tone that hasn't stopped for two days or so.

How big is the house? Does it sound at the same volume in every room? Do you have an attic or a basement/cellar? Are there any adjacent properties, either above/below or to the side?

Invite a friend or relative into the house. Can they hear it as well?

If so, encourage them to walk around and see if they can pinpoint the source.

If not, you may have tinnitus and might need to consult your GP or hearing specialist.
