Hi all

I’m considering buying the following hoist from Screwfix :
Hilka Pro-Craft 250kg Electric Hoist

As I’m planning to use it to construct a hoist seat to transport my dog upstairs I was wondering whether it has a built in arrestor to stop the load crashing to the floor

Does anyone know please as I can’t find it mentioned anywhere

Thanks in advance

Crashing into the floor as in "the basket+dog hitting the downstairs floor at high speed"?

Nothing crashes with these; they're very slow and the motor both winds and unwinds the cable so depending on which button you're holding you're either travelling upwards at 0.1mph or downwards at 0.1mph

There is an auto stop at the top so you can't wind the hook into the drum. There isn't an auto stop for the load reaching the floor but the cable goes slack so you can tell.

If you're going to ride it with the dog, or control it from downstairs you'll need to extend the wire on the control box

Yes it does, see the answers to questions 21-30 on the Q & A's section.
Thank for the replies @jj4091 @robinbanks

I assume it’s that question titled fails Safe that you’re referring to

This is the reply from the manufacturer to that question :

“Hello, thank you for the question. The 250Kg electric hoist has a mechanical lock stopping it from falling, which is only released when electrically operated. The item has been tested and passed other safety requirements to be allowed to be sold in the UK. Regards, Hilka Tools”

I did see that one But the way I read that was effectively when the hoist is requested to go up or down simply a brake of some sort is released effectively just a switch
But what I’m thinking of is could there be a situation when the actual hoist itself fails whilst in operation allowing the load to descend quickly to the floor
From what I’ve seen, you can purchase arrestors which are an additional device attached to the load hook specifically for this use case but I just wondered whether this device has it built-in in some shape or form

She is only 10kg and no I won’t be travelling in the basket with her

I think it may be a question. I need to address to the manufacturer specifically due to the nature of what I’m hoping to use this for.

It seems quite clear. It says a mechanical lock which is only relealsed when a supply is put on to it. In my opinion that would be the only problem with it in so much as if you have a power cut or loose power for some other reason during use it will stop where ever it happens to be at the time.

Personally I'd consider some kind of manual chain winch for the small load involved and safety. You can get "mini" block and tackle that stop dead when you leave go and could be operated from either floor. Yale do one that's quite pricey but there are cheaper alternatives.

@jj4091 @cdbe
Thanks both for your inputs
I’ll try to give hilka a buzz tomorrow and will report back just how the safety measures work exactly
Thanks for the Yale style alternative
I’ll give that some thought also
