Hinkley Point C - C stands for CON

We're going to pour vast amounts of money and effort into nuclear, for expensive electricity.

So its valid to say that we could instead pour vast amounts of money and effort into coastal, for cheaper electricity.

And I don't believe that the costs of research into earthmoving are anywhere near the cost of research into building atomic kettles that won't explode (often)
Where is your evidence that it would be cheaper?
And that it is comparable?

Is coal the only fossil fuel you know about? I'm shocked.

Not if you promise the builders equally expensive rates.

Why would you pay a bunch of men with earthmovers extortionate rates?

The only other fuel we use for electricity in any quantity is gas, and we import far too much. Right now we have no alternative, but we are moving towards nuclear in the long term.

Gas will still be necessary in the long term for balancing out supply.

Intermittent supplies will ensure this is still the case.

Its not all bad news. This from 2009:
"As part of the package The Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham has been chosen as the base for the UK's new £25m Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC).The NAMRC will provide a focal point for the bulk of the UK civil nuclear manufacturing industry supply chain, ensuring that manufacturers in the UK have the capability and capacity required to compete for nuclear new build in the UK and globally, from skills training to research and development.

It was also announced that Rolls-Royce's planned civil nuclear facility will also be developed in South Yorkshire. The facility will manufacture, assemble and test high quality components that are essential to meet the requirements of the planned new civil nuclear power plants across the UK, worth in excess of £1bn a year. "

And there are degrees for the nuclear industry that have been in the UK for years, so we are playing catch up, but the potential global market is huge. Meanwhile, our Government has made a bad deal, after sitting on it hands for decades.

In today's news:

Hinkley Point: EDF raises cost estimate for nuclear plant

"French energy supplier EDF has estimated that the cost of completing the new Hinkley Point nuclear plant will be £1.5bn more than expected.

The company, which is the project's main backer, said the total cost of the plant was now likely to be £19.6bn.

Hinkley Point C would be the UK's first new nuclear plant for decades, but has been beset with budget problems.

A review of the project found there was also a risk it could be delayed by up to 15 months."

Its so obvious the costs will continue to rise and rise because EDF can turn around at each stage and say well we didnt expect this we need more money and
