Hi, I could do with a bit of help regarding a kitchen upgrade.Having just re-fitted my kitchen, I installed 10mm2 T&E from the consumer unit to the above worksurface switch box, leaving sufficient T&E to run from the switch to what I presumed would be a under- worktop connection box. However my sparky decided that, as at that time, I was only running a 6.5 Kw hob , and a low power oven running of the ring main, I would only need 6mm2 T&E from the switch to the hob!(Without a connection box) Now, I want to fit a 3.6 Kw oven under the hob giving me a total load of 10.1Kw :? and i'm a little uncertain of the best way to do it. My original plan was to fit a surface mounted connection box under the work surface and connect both the hob and the oven to that, fitting a 45 amp mcb in the consumer unit. However will this short piece of 6mm2 (30 cm buried in conduit, plaster and tiled) prevent me from doing this and if so, is there an easy solution? With thanks for looking

Use the cooker switch to control a mini CU under the worktop. Fit it with a 16 amp and a 32 amp MCB. Both appliances then have correct fusing.

One of these.
Fitted with these MCBs.

The whole circuit should be run in 10mm² cable up to the MCBs.

Thanks for that, I know it's more work, but I'll bite the bullet and do as you suggest, then , at least I won't have to worry about it at 4 am.( but i'm sure I can find something else to worry about!

Hello bruno,

May I ask the distance between your C/U and the cooker point, and how the cable is installed, is it clipped surface, or in trunking etc ??

Cheers,

Ed.

Ed, thanks for the interest, the distance from my CU to the above worksurface switch is approximately 10 metres. This wire is all 10mm2 T&E, running in the roof void and then in trunking and plaster/tiling down to the switch. I reckon this wire is good for 45 amps, but the bogey is the short length of 6mm2 T&E from the switch running in plaster and tiling for 150mm and then in plaster only under the worksurface for a further 150mm. It then exits the plaster and then waves in the breeze in a loose loop to the hob.

Sorry to jump in someone elses question, but this solution may help me as well...(cheers) ...but do u mean this: CCU > 10mm2 > MCB (1*16amp, 1*32AMP) > 10mm2 > oven/hob

or could i do this

6mm2 > CCU > 6mm2 > MCB (1*16amp/1*32AMP) > 6mm2 > oven/hob

If so, thanks for the help.

Cheers

J
