House price gravy train may have hit the buffers

no way it would ever be worth more than the £200k we were paying. About 15 years later we sold for £350k
But equally, it’s not paid you as much as it looks when factoring in all the other things that rose over 15 years, including the cost of the place you moved to?

We do too, feels great getting rid of that mortgage doesn't it?
Ah but apparently paying off their debts is what poor people do. Rich people find other people to pay off their debts.

or a colour TV
Now there’s a sensible aspiration! Where have those times gone ey?

When I was young I didn't want a decent job, a home of my own, a car, a family, or a colour TV.

My latest example is a friends daughter who asked her mum for a reduction in her rent as it’s too expensive. She did this immediately after booking a very expensive holiday to Japan

The rent she pays is a very small percentage of her take home pay as a qualified nurse

It's nothing new. My dad back in the 1980s blew money on fags, booze and silver slabs of hifi equipment while we couldn't afford much else.

Economic incompetence is just normal. Most people seem to have a wilful disconnect between the money they spend on themselves daily and the lifetime or even monthly balance. Those who understand have always been a minority.
