how best to fit upright plank to kitchen worktop?

Hi all,

I'm redoing the kitchen and building some bespoke units. Have now fitted the wood worktop on the IKEA carcasses and want to build a dresser style cupboard as the last unit in the run, using the worktop as the waist height "shelf". My question is how best to fit the uprights for the dresser to the worktop - if at all?

Should I cut grooves in the worktop for the uprights to sit in - or even cut out slots for the uprights to slot into? I'm conscious of potential movement of the wood.

I'm keen to avoid cutting the worktop into smaller segments but will do so if necessary/most sensible.

damson - make the 'dresser' as a separate, self-contained, unit. Lift it onto the worktop and anchor it to the wall behind. No need to fix/cut-into the worktop.

if you have a router cut 2 half round or v grooves 6mm deep 2 and 2.5 inches in from the back of each shelve before assembly to stand plates on

I use biscuits to locate the uprights but dowels will do, then secure with a few screws up from the underside of the worktop. Doing it this way saves having a horizontal board at the bottom if you were to make the top as a separate carcase. Something like this
