Not a joke! Do I just pull it harder, or is there some sort of catch I cannot see/feel? Or should the chrome circle twist? Tried all, except pulling harder..... worried something is gonna break. There are some springs either side, but I can't see a way to manipulate them.

The springs are for holding it in place DO NOT manipulate them! The chrome bezel part should twist off, the light should be to come out of the hole completely I'd have thought.

More aggressive twisting worked. Weird thing, bit of glass fell out. But not the glass in front of the bulb, as that was still there..... strange. Maybe a spare? Or should it be doubled up? Weird...IMG_20160812_202208598.jpg

That's the front glass from a lamp. If not the lamp you've just removed, then an old one. You can throw it away

The glass in the fitting protects you, the glass in the OP's hand (if Iggifer's correct) is the remnants of a defective GU10/MR16 lamp.
They do very occasionally just fall to bits.

Those fittings are almost impossible to do a lamp swap without (partly at least) removing them from the ceiling.

yes, obvious now, the lamp I removed is without glass. SOmehow did not spot that at the time!
