Hi

I've fitted a waste unit to a sink and now need to fit the trap etc, as shown in the pics, the bottom of the waste unit is exactly the same size as the pvc pipe so the pvc nut wont reach the thread of the waste unit and connect properly. It's a standard size trap and waste I was told, am I missing a part? Or do I need a smaller waste unit/larger trap unit? I'm sure it's obvious but I know nothing about plumbing & waste units etc so any advice is appreciated,.

Cheers

I have a similar problem to the OP, and have looked through the posts before making a new one (hence 5-year gap.)
In my case, I'm replacing a chrome bottle trap which a bodger/plumber had fitted many years ago, presumably with mastic rather than a washer, and I want to fit a reliable plastic trap which can be unscrewed without using grips - hence McAlpine.
I think that the problem shown in the photos is not that the trap is the wrong size (as suggested above) but that an ADJUSTABLE-INLET trap is needed rather than a standard trap. I had assumed that adjustable-inlet only meant that the pipe down to the bottle is adjustable - which it is - but (in the case of a McAlpine trap at least) it also means that the nut to fix to the basin outlet extends further beyond the flange and washer, without the extension of the inner pipe which the standard A10 trap has.

I'm afraid, the trap in the photo above is definitely the wrong size! ;)
In photo two, if the coupling nut is going to slip over the lip of the pipe, there is no chance that the thread will engage with the basin! :)
