How do I replace batteries on a British gas wr1 thermostat

my dad's wr1 is flashing red continuously and I have read that that means the thermostat batteries need to be replaced. I have no handbook and do not know where to locate these, and whether they are on the wireless receiver or the thermostat in the hall, which I guess sends signals to the wr1. Can anyone help please...
