I have just purchases a hardwood garden chair. Am I best treating it with an oil product like linseed,
or a varnish?

Thanks

More down to personal preference really, but I would chose oil or wood stain, it soaks in giving a bit more treatment.

I use linseed oil, thinning the first few coats with white spirit.

What do you suppose teak oil is made of?

"teak oil" is not made from teak.
learn something new everyday, it would make a bloody good oil though because I do know teak wood has very good natural oils. That's where my thinking was anyway.

And to get back to the original question, what timber is the furniture in question?

It is Arcadia wood, and I have decided to treat it with Danish oil.
