How do you fix pull rod for basin?

Had a guest stay over and they managed to destroy the rod thingymajig that you pull/push to stop/release the water in the basin

How does one fix this? Currently I have a basin full of water

i would prefer to replace this mechanism with a pop up waste.. Is this possible?

Follow the rod ,beneath the basin ,you should be able to see where it has come apart. Or post pics of below basin for further advice.
Replacing waste should be possible ,but access may be a problem.
