How many hours is a day as in a day rate!!

I've had this with customers when I've not even been on a day rate!

Quote for the job, quote accepted, do the job, request payment. Customer complains.

Me: You wanted me to to fit a socket/ light/ whatever...

Customer: Yes.

M: You accepted my quote.

C: Yes.

M: So what's the issue?

C: It only took you X minutes.

M: And?

C: I paid £X and it ONLY took you X minutes.

M: The transaction consisted of me giving you what you wanted in exchange for £X. And that is what happened. Time did not enter the equation.

Last full-time job was a 10-hour day, in real terms that mean the first 2 hours of over-time was at base rate, however when I had the industrial accident I got paid for a 10-hour day when on the sick. So for me, it worked out well.

Day rate = madness.
Not sure that's always the case. I had my father in laws's plumber tile a 60sqm, self levelled floor floor at £20/sqm. It took him a collective total of 2.5 days, coming in evenings after his other jobs. Next thing I got him to do I paid a day rate instead (250 at the time).

Didn't seem to work any different speed regardless of the pay style, and I do wish I'd had the floor tiled at day rate!

As a general point, it is annoying when the quote is accompanied by an observation that the job will take two or three days and it takes a day. The customer suspects the time had been exaggerated to make the quote easier to swallow,

Once I fitted a beautiful walnut floor in a lounge open plan with tiled kitchen.
I discussed transition trims with the customer and she opted for a wooden trim of same standard as the floor.
Trim had a double curved shape (damn architects!).
I quoted £200 extra for this trim and she accepted.
Took me good part of a day to source the 2m walnut planks, cut it to shape, route the fixing lip, plane and sand it smooth, colour match it and varnish it to make it identical to the floor.
Took it to site and, having prepared everything already, it took me 10 minutes to fit it.
Time to pay came and husband objected to the £200 extra for "just a piece of wood" and 10 minutes work.
I explained the work behind it but he was having none of it.
I said I could remove the trim and he agreed.
Wife wasn't happy about it but he seemed to be in control of the finances.
I removed the trim and stored it safely in my workshop.
A month or so later the wife calls and she wants the trim.
She says the husband will pay.
I say that I need to build another one and it will cost £400.
She says it's ok.
I told her to do a bank transfer BEFORE I started this NEW job.
The husband paid.
I went there, spent 10 minutes fitting the same trim and the husband sheeply hid in a corner while the wife expressed all her relief in having a finished floor.
Moral of the story: there's more than time on the job...and...
Never mess about with a seasoned carpenter...

Did you feel a little bit sorry for him?
