I'm finally at the stage where the staircase is being fitted in my house but don't know how to fix the newel post to the concrete floor? Is there specialist fixing kits for this, or can I use a couple of "L" brackets?

i'm a DIYer not a pro, but i suspect 'L' brackets wouldn't last long if you had kids...!!

My gut feeling is a relatively thick diameter steel rod stuck (with the appropriate glue) into the concrete, and similarly up into the newel post?...
(lots of accurate drilling required though!!)

Did the newel post not come notched out from the manufacturer to be attached to the stringer?

Do you have a bullnose step on the stairs?

There are a few inconclusive post on here which I searched on as I am also doing some stairs work at the moment.

And I found this usefil site too

http://www.stairbox.com/staircase_help/how_to_fit_a_newel_post.html

Although I think in my case I am going to fit the newel to the String by bolting and glueing from the side.

If it is anything like ours don't fix it.

The stairs were fixed to the joist at the top and screwed to a stud wall down one side, no fixings into the floor.

I put them back the same way after changing Newel bases.
