How to add a wired device to a wireless system

whichever wireless home automation system I end up with (zwave, zigbee etc) and most probably with a Samsung Smartthings multi protocol controller, is there any way I could add certain wired devices like a recessed PIR sensor in the ceiling?

I know the whole point of wireless is to be wireless but just wondering how certain wired devices can be wired up this way (say battery hungry devices)?
